“Snacking” can make you lose focus!

No, this is not a new blog about the danger of fast food and sugar, even though I don’t mind telling people how to eat better. No, what I am thinking about is a clear trend that I see all over the Internet and sometimes in our offline world as well.

So what do I mean with “snacking”? Everything we do is cut in smaller and smaller pieces. Take music as an example. 10 years ago we used to buy whole albums and sit down and enjoy the whole hour. Nowadays we search for a short clip on YouTube and after 30 seconds we are satisfied and continue to another tune. Even if we like the song.

In my world of Internet marketing most training and learning sessions are transformed to short videos. No one has the time to read a whole manual or even a 10 page pdf.

So what is the problem? Well, if we follow this trend, which I believe is based on the fact that we are too stressed, we will not be able to take in any more advanced training or experiences. In fact I can make a reference to food again. What will happen with the culture of long relaxing dinners, with high class meals if we don’t have time to actually work on our cooking skills. Luckily enough there are still some high class restaurants.

And will we continue to read books, or will we be satisfied just by reading the summary in one page?

I know, I have taken it to the edge, but my point is that if we continue with our “snacking” and quick summaries in everything we do, we will find it harder and harder to concentrate and focus on more advanced problems and tasks that takes more of our thinking and analyzing skills. Not to mention what it does to our stress level.

So in order to keep focus, and not to forget that skill, we need to structure and plan our day, to make sure that we really have time to use for our tasks. We also need to get rid of all surrounding disturbances that will make it harder to focus on our specific task. And if we also plan for a 30 minutes of reflection and mindset every day, we’re on the safe side.
